Authentic Moments – Gaspésie Tour Extras
Here is what you need to know about the habits of Gaspesians to help you check off items on your list of “Gaspésie Tour Extras” during the Tour de la Gaspésie Discovery Activity.
Hear different Gaspesian accents
Did you know that there are about 20 different accents in Gaspésie? Depending on what village you are visiting and whether it is on the north or south side of the peninsula, you may notice a difference in speakers’ intonations. In Paspébiac, the locals’ Basque and Anglo-Norman ancestry influences their way of speaking. In Chandler, you may notice a more cosmopolitan accent, while in Rivière-au-Renard, the mass arrival of French Canadians is reflected in the cadence of their speech. In Carleton-sur-Mer, you can hear the lilting Acadian accent. And, of course, the region has its own unique expressions!

Go for a stroll along a wharf
The wharves in Gaspésie are great meeting places and are a bit like church squares: each coastal village has one and the locals are in the habits of visiting them regularly. They go for a stroll, to admire the sunset, do a bit of fishing… and of course have a chat with whoever else is there!

Fish in the sea
Fishing is closely linked to the history of Gaspésie. Today, fishing for crab, lobster and shrimp is still one of the main economic activities in the region. Do as the Gaspesians do and go fishing! You can fish without a licence for mackerel from the end of the wharves and for striped bass from the beach. You can even go deep-sea fishing!
Have a picnic on the beach
What better way to feel like you are on vacation than by enjoying a picnic on the beach? The sound of the waves, the warm sand, space for the children to run around and for you to relax—what more could you ask for? Stock up on regional products at the local delicatessen, visit a snack bar or fish shop, and put together a delicious and simple picnic. Once you are on the beach, you can build a sand castle, fly a kite, skip stones on the water—in short, have a good time with your family! Imagine, for us the beach is our backyard!
